I am of the opinion that anyone can travel no matter what their financial status is. There are so many ways to save money for travelling and make more of it, so if you really want to do it you can. I have been asked so many times since moving back to the UK how I managed to afford to keep my lifestyle for the past 5 years.

Now are you ready for the truth bomb??? Work your arse off and save your butt off. There is no other magical way of saving money for travelling.

  1. Pick up extra work. Be that at events, bars or odd jobs. Doesn’t matter where in the world you live there is always casual work you can pick up along the way. Hell, you can even become an Uber driver or rider if you have a bike. Picking up extra work will not only allow you to earn more but it will also stop you spending money. Win win!

  2. Cut back on things you do not need. If you are going travelling everything will have to fit in a backpack so chances are you won’t have space for that dress or funky pair of heels you have your eyes on.

  3. Start to sell the items that you do have. Put them on Gumtree, eBay and Facebook marketplace. You can start with the items in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn in a year and work from there. You will find that you have a lot of stuff that you don’t really need.

  4. Be creative with your time. There is sure to be so much free stuff that you can do around the city that will entertain you for hours. Check out local museums, parks or walks for example and don’t forget your packed lunch so that you don’t have to eat out.

  5. Buy food for the week and meal prep. You won’t want to waste all that good healthy food that is in the fridge.

  6. Do invest in a gym membership or fitness class. The motivation to stay on track will keep you off the booze and in the gym instead of spending money. You can pick up memberships pretty cheaply now.

  7. Pay off all your debts as quickly as possible. If you come into money then pay off the overdraft so that you are not being charged interest on it.

  8. Cancel your phone bill and go pay as you go. After all you will not need the contract when you leave the country.

  9. Start to learn skills that you can use when you are travelling to earn more money. For example copywriting, digital marketing or website building. You don’t have to have all the money before you go as long as you can pick it up along the way.

  10. Let Groupon, Wowcher and any other special offer site become your friend. Sometimes you can find great deals on these for things you actually need. However do not be tempted to buy rubbish you do not need and will have to sell anyway.
